"In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cherokee Nation is providing free information at the tribe’s Nowata Primary Care Center and the Bartlesville and Vinita clinics." NOWATA, OKLAHOMA – October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Cherokee Nation Cancer Program is hoping to educate members of the public with information booths in the lobbies of their Nowata Primary Care Center and the Bartlesville and Vinita clinics. The displays offer information on mammograms and breast cancer awareness. According to the Cherokee Nation Cancer Registry, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer among Native Americans in the Cherokee Nation, and it is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths of Native American women in the Cherokee Nation. Director of Cherokee Nation Cancer Programs Kym Cravatt said that the tribe’s program provides yearly breast and cervical cancer screenings. According to the American Cancer Society, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer an average of every three minutes.
