According to the Cherokee Nation Cancer Registry, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer among Native Americans in the Cherokee Nation, and it is also the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths of Native American women in the Cherokee Nation. Director of Cherokee Nation Cancer Programs Kym Cravatt said that the tribe’s program provides yearly breast and cervical cancer screenings. According to the American Cancer Society, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer an average of every three minutes.
