TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith has declared Thursday, November 30, as Methamphetamine Awareness Day in the Cherokee Nation. “Meth not only destroys individual’s lives and family’s lives, but it also creates a bad economy,” said Principal Chief Chad Smith. “Breaking the cycle of drug addicition requires strong support for prevention, enforcement, treatment and environmental health. We hope to contribute to this through our anti-meth coalition.” At Smith’s request, the tribe formed an anti-methamphetamine coalition to combine and coordinate efforts in the fight against the epidemic, which plagues the entire United States. “The recent progress of our coalition has provided an opportunity to further raise community awareness and support for prevention, not only for our citizens, but for other residents in our jurisdiction,” Smith said. President George W. Bush has also proclaimed this day as National Methamphetamine Awareness Day in the United States in order to generate awareness about the damaging effects of meth abuse.
