TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – Cherokee Nation Elder Services is holding its annual elder conference on Friday, June 2, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Talking Leaves Job Corps offices on Bald Hill Road south of Tahlequah. This year’s conference is titled “A Celebration of Wisdom and Awareness.”“We place a high value on our elders, since they are among those who keep our cultural traditions alive,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.
In celebrating the wisdom and cultural values of Cherokee elders, this year’s conference will include sessions on scam artists who prey on the elderly, Cherokee traditions, community involvement, elder abuse, cardiovascular disease and the National Indian Council on Aging.
Admission is free for any Native American and their spouse who is an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe and who is 50 years of age or older, and those under 50 can attend by paying a $5 registration fee.
Grand prizes as well as door prizes will be given away, and the Cherokee National Color Guard will be featured in both the opening and closing ceremonies.
