TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation will host a financial record-keeping and risk management workshop in three locations in mid-May for tribal producers, leaders, landowners and staff members using a newly developed financial record-keeping system specifically designed for small and limited-resource farmers and ranchers to help them reduce their risks associated with agriculture. Members of any federally recognized Native American tribe are invited to attend.Presenters will include Nathan Notah, outreach specialist for the Intertribal Agriculture Council (IAC); Janet Johnson of the National Tribal Development Association (NTDA); Steve Swogger of the Cherokee Nation’s Department of Natural Resources; and representatives of the USDA’s Risk Management Agency.
Items on the agenda for each meeting include farm/ranch records, financial analysis, liquidity, meeting cash flow requirements, financial statements, risk management overview and how to manage risk in agriculture.
A certificate of completion of this workshop will be awarded to participants who complete the workshop.
The first workshop will be held Tuesday, May 16, at the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex south of Tahlequah in the Community Meeting Room behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees; the second will be held Wednesday, May 17, in Stilwell at the Ozarks Electric Cooperative on Highway 51; and the third will be held on Thursday, May 18, at the Jay Community Center in Jay. All workshops will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and lunch will be provided.
