PARK HILL, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Heritage Center will be hosting several classes throughout the summer, including special classes on basketry, genealogy and traditional Cherokee games.The traditional basketry class will instruct students in the basics of flat reed basketry and the creation of a traditional Cherokee basket. Techniques will be taught in weaving, dyeing and construction, as well as the history of basket making. Students will also be provided the opportunity to create a basket of their own. Class size is limited and there will be a $30 registration fee which includes instructor fees and materials.
The Cherokee genealogical class is an informal question and answer session through which participants can interact personally with an experienced genealogist. The class fee is $5 for youth to age 14 and $10 for adults age 15 and older. Pre-registration for the class is required.
Cherokee Games will begin with Cornstalk Shoot and Blowgun Shoot. Athletes in these two categories will compete for cash awards, and spectators can attend at no cost. The second of the two-part series of games, including marbles, stickball and chunkey will be played in September.
The first Saturday of each month is Cherokee Saturday. Cherokee Nation citizens as well as members of all federally recognized Cherokee tribes and one guest are admitted free to the museum and villages.
