TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation will formally dedicate the Jack Brown House as an historic property at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, on the campus of Sequoyah High School (SHS) in Tahlequah. The historic, white two-story house on the hill located on the SHS grounds, which is currently being remodeled, will be used as guest quarters for dignitaries visiting the Cherokee Nation.
“It is important to the perpetuation of our Cherokee culture and history to preserve historic Cherokee sites,” said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith. “Naming it the Jack Brown House is an appropriate salute to one of our distinguished Cherokee families.”
In addition to the dedication, the 85th birthday of Marion Hagerstrand, the daughter of Jack and Nola Brown, will be acknowledged. The family moved into the house when she was two and one-half years old.
“Throughout her life Marion Hagerstrand has continued a family tradition of service to the Cherokee people. Her quiet dignity and unwavering support of the Cherokee Nation have caused many younger people to refer to her as ‘Queen of the Cherokees,’” said John Ketcher, former Sequoyah student, long-time Deputy Chief and Tribal Council Member.
Jack Brown (1887-1987), a long-time educator and Cherokee citizen, served as Superintendent of the Sequoyah Orphan Training School. He remained the driving force of the school for 32 years.
