TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Cherokee Nation is now accepting applications for the 2006 Miss Cherokee Leadership competition, which will be held on Saturday, August 26, at 7 p.m. in the ballroom at Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah.

The purpose of the Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition is to identify young women with leadership abilities to represent the Cherokee Nation. The chosen candidate will serve as a goodwill ambassador and messenger to promote the government, history, language and culture of the Cherokee people.

“We encourage every eligible young woman to participate in this year’s Miss Cherokee competition. This event is a win-win situation for everyone, since it requires leadership skills to apply and follow through with the competition, which leads to enhanced self-confidence. No matter the outcome, everyone wins,” said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation.

Miss Cherokee 2005 LeShawna Fields of Marble City, a freshman at NSU, also hopes all interested young women will enter this year’s competition.

“I encourage all young Cherokee women to participate in the Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition,” Fields said. “Not only have I had the privilege of traveling, meeting people and making new friends, I also had the honor of representing the Cherokee Nation at many events held throughout the United States. This experience has enabled me to grow as an individual, obtain more knowledge pertaining to the history of the Cherokee Nation and also let me share my culture and heritage with others.”

Contestants will compete for a $3,000 grand prize scholarship. The first runner-up will receive a $2,000 scholarship, and the second runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Contestants for Miss Cherokee must be between the ages of 17 and 22 before August 26, 2006. All contestants must be at least one-fourth Cherokee, must possess a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB) card and be a tribal citizen of the Cherokee Nation. Contestants must be high school graduates or have successfully completed a G.E.D. testing program for high school equivalency. Contestants cannot have been married or have ever cohabitated, cannot have children or have previously served as Miss Cherokee. They must never have been convicted of any crime or have any criminal charges pending and must be physically able to fulfill the duties of the position.

Miss Cherokee Leadership contestants will be judged in several categories, including interview, platform presentation, social demeanor, tribal knowledge and a portfolio of leadership and community service activities.
