TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation recently donated $2,500 from the Tribal Youth Grant Fund to the Cherokee County 4-H/FFA Livestock Booster Club, helping the participating students during the recent Spring Livestock show. A total of 34 Cherokee youth were part of the event.

For more than a decade, the Cherokee Nation has supported the local 4-H and FFA group, and this year’s donation is more than has ever been given to the group before. The funds will be divided between 34 students who are Cherokee citizens participating in the spring show.

Cherokee Tribal Councilor Bill John Baker said the tribe appreciates the opportunity to support worthy youth projects, and that he doesn’t know of one any better than 4-H.

“The kids in 4-H and FFA learn so much that is important to them in life, such as responsibility, showmanship and leadership,” Baker said. “It’s a chance for us to reward these youth and make the package a little better for them. These types of events make me feel like I’ve got the best job in the world as a Tribal Councilor.”

Cherokee citizen Chad Baker, who is no relation to Councilor Baker, said the donation from the tribe really boosts the amount they receive and helps them prepare for the coming year. Chad won the Grand Champion Heifer division of the show.
