The Little Miss and Mister Cherokee contest will be one of many activities held during the 2006 Cherokee National Holiday in September.
TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation will host the annual Little Miss and Mister Cherokee Leadership Contest on Tuesday, August 1 and Thursday, August 3 at 6 p.m. in the Sequoyah High School Gym in Tahlequah.

According to event coordinator Joyce Bunch, the contest is held annually in conjunction with the Cherokee National Holiday and is a wonderful way to promote Cherokee culture and history among Cherokee youth.

“The Little Miss and Mister Cherokee Leadership contest has been a part of the Cherokee National Holiday for several years. Each year it has grown in popularity and size,” said Bunch. “This event gives our youngest citizens a chance to share their knowledge about our Cherokee heritage, language and culture. These young participants are our future leaders and we hope this contest serves as a stepping stone for them.”

There will be four age divisions: 3-4, 5-7, 8-10, and 11-13. The participant must be of their age category on or before Wednesday, August 30 to be eligible.

Contestants will be judged on traditional dress, Cherokee history/traditions, a cultural knowledge interview, as well as poise and personality. No parents or guardians will be allowed on stage.

Judges will choose one female and one male winner, first runner up and second runner up in each age division. The judges’ decisions will be final. Award ceremonies will take place immediately after the competition, and a reception will follow. A photographer will also be on hand to give the participants an opportunity to purchase pictures.

Doors will open at 5 p.m., registration will begin at 5:30 p.m. and judging will start promptly at 6 p.m.

The deadline to register is Friday, July 14 at 5 p.m. The entry fee is $5 and may be paid in cash or by money order payable to Cherokee Nation. All entry forms must include a copy of the contestant’s Cherokee Nation Tribal Membership Card and CDIB.

The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in honor of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. This year’s theme is “The Cherokee Nation Continues in Full Force and Effect” in commemoration of the Act of 1906, which provided that the tribal constitutional governments of the Five Tribes should continue in “full force and effect,” thus ensuring continuous tribal sovereignty.
