TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – Cherokee Nation Marshal Service seized a large indoor marijuana crop during a recent search of a Tahlequah residence. The narcotics investigation unit of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service served a search warrant at a home in Tahlequah that had been under surveillance for several weeks prior to the warrant being served. Upon entry into the home, the Marshals discovered a hidden door that led to an indoor marijuana growing area in the basement of the home.
Thirty marijuana plants in various stages of growth were found, along with several bottles of alcohol also containing marijuana and up to two pounds of processed marijuana. Officials estimate the value to be around $30,000.
Marshals arrested Jerry Newport, 59, of Tahlequah at the conclusion of the search.
According to Cherokee Nation Marshal Service Director Sharon Wright, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBNDD) considers the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service to be their “Eastern Arm” in controlling dangerous substances in Northeastern Oklahoma.
“Our narcotics unit was formed in 2001 after methamphetamine (meth) was not only being used, but cooked in residences throughout our jurisdiction,” Wright said. “We formed this operation to seek out these labs and go in and shut them as well as other drug sites down.”
All of the material seized at the scene has been submitted to the lab at the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for analysis.
