TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The 54th Annual Cherokee National Holiday will host a Slow-Pitch Softball beginning on Friday, September 1 through Sunday, September 3 in Tahlequah.

Deadline for registration is Friday, August 25 at 5 p.m., and the $175 entry fee must be paid in cash or by money order payable to Cherokee National Holiday Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament. No refunds will be offered. Participants must present their CDIB, but can have up to four non-Indian players per team. ASA rules will apply to the tournament, and awards will be presented for first through fourth place.

According to tournament director George Roach, this year’s event will again be competitive.

“We expect to recruit teams from all over the United States,” said Roach. “Each year, the tournament has grown, last year we had teams from as far away as California, Florida and South Dakota.”

There will be a coaches meeting and team drawing on Monday, August 28 at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers located at the Cherokee Nation complex in Tahlequah.

The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in honor of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. This year’s theme is “The Cherokee Nation Continues in Full Force and Effect” in commemoration of the Act of 1906, which provided that the tribal constitutional governments of the Five Tribes should continue in “full force and effect,” thus ensuring continuous tribal sovereignty.
