TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – Sequoyah High School (SHS) will host a three-day summer camp to teach Native American Indian youth about peer pressure, making good decisions and sports. The Native Vision Sports and Life Skills Camp will be held June 4-6 on the SHS campus in, the Cherokee Nation's capital city, Tahlequah.“Sports is just a hook to get kids here,” said Clark Gaines, former National Football League (NFL) player who helps organize the camp.
Campers will spend half of the day learning about the sport of their choice from professional and college athletes and the other half in breakout sessions on various topics including leadership, technology and Cherokee culture to name a few.
According to Gaines, the camp will teach three important lessons: respect for authority, completion of the task, and the value of education.
“We want to make sure that through all the drills and activities we have, it’s not how big and strong you are, it’s how you apply and use discipline,” Gaines said. “Without an education, a lot of those skills cannot be used effectively.”
The sports offered are basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, running and baseball. Campers who are traveling more than 30 miles will be allowed to stay on campus with a chaperone. Registration will be limited to the first 800 students.
