TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee National Youth Choir will again be highlighted in the U.S. capital during a special worship service January 22 at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

The choir, under the direction of Mary Kay Henderson, will perform a musical prelude to the 11 a.m. service. The choral prelude, consisting of Gospel and other sacred music, will be sung entirely in the Cherokee language. Based in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, the choir draws students from the 14 counties that comprise the Cherokee Nation.

The service will celebrate Oklahoma’s leaders and citizens, with worshipers from the state playing key roles during the service, including bearing communion offering up gifts to the poor.

Invited guests include Governor Brad Henry, Senators James Inhofe and Tom Coburn, other Oklahoma members of Congress and members of the Oklahoma State Society, the organization of state natives who live and work in the Washington area.

"As a national house of prayer for all people, the cathedral opens its doors to all. On January 22, we especially welcome Oklahoma citizens as we honor their contributions to our nation," said Vanessa Andrews, director of the National Cathedral Association. "While Oklahoma Day will be a wonderful celebration of the state, we also pray for those Oklahomans and others affected by the recent devastating wildfires.”

The Cherokee National Youth Choir is comprised of approximately 40 students within the Cherokee Nation. The group has gained popularity in recent years, and has toured throughout Oklahoma and the United States, including special performances at Mount Rushmore, the National Congress of the American Indian convention, and last year throughout the Washington D.C. area, including a special performance at the White House where they were introduced by President Bush. Recently, the group was invited to South Dakota for a special performance to Native American youth to show their example and leadership abilities as well as their musical talent. The choir has also recently produced a new CD which is currently being played on area radio stations and sold throughout the Cherokee Nation. Visit the Cherokee Nation Gift Shop online!
