TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Community Service Division recently sponsored a Cultural Renewal Leadership Workshop designed to help students gain understanding of Cherokee culture and the importance of working together. A group of sixty-four youth from within the tribe’s 14-county jurisdiction attended the workshop.Workshop participants took part in team-building and problem-solving activities that encouraged communication. According to Cherokee First representative Diana Mouse, the workshop strives to promote Cherokee citizenship among Cherokee students.
“The goal of the workshop is to teach students how to become a more effective leaders and how to work successfully within a group by promoting team work,” said Mouse.
The most recent Cultural Renewal Leadership Workshop was the second of a series of interactive meetings geared toward Cherokee youth. The purpose of the workshops is to show students how Cherokees have survived and excelled through group actions by exposing youth to the idea of leadership development.
Chase Vanover, of Lowrey Elementary School, said he was nervous about the interview portion of the workshop but enjoyed meeting new people.
“I had a good time,” said Vanover. “I can’t wait until our meeting next month. I’m going to try and get one of my friends to come with me next time.”
