TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Cherokee Nation recently donated $5,000 to Help in Crisis, the area’s shelter for the battered and abused victims and their children in Adair, Cherokee, Wagoner and Sequoyah counties.

The center, headquartered in Tahlequah, provides domestic violence information and services in the four counties as well as through its Child Advocacy Center in Sallisaw. The organization’s mission is to eliminate family violence and sexual assault through educational counseling, support and prevention services.

“Help in Crisis for many years has done a wonderful job of assisting abused women in Cherokee and surrounding counties. We are fortunate to have this battered women’s shelter,” said Bill John Baker, Cherokee Nation Tribal Councilor for District 1, where Help in Crisis is located. “Many other organizations locally and statewide look to Help in Crisis as a leader in the field. For Cherokee Nation to be able to help in such a large way makes me proud not only as a Cherokee citizen but also as a tribal councilor.”

Among numerous services provided by Help in Crisis are a 24-hour abuse and rape crisis hotline staffed by volunteers for peer counseling and referrals; a women’s shelter for rape victims, abused women and their children to stay while planning their future; assistance in filing protective court orders against abusers or rapists; housing assistance; educational counseling for survivors of domestic violence and assault; and rape advocacy and intervention for victims in dealing with hospitals and law enforcement. The center also provides registered nurses to conduct forensic examinations of rape survivors.

The shelter also offers transitional living arrangements while women look for permanent safe housing. Women and children may stay in these units for up to 12 months.

“We are pleased that we have a strong working relationship with Cherokee Nation,” said HIC Executive Director Deana Franke. “We hope to continue to work together with Cherokee Nation to end domestic violence and sexual assault in our state.”
