Cherokee Heritage Center (CHC) Senior Genealogist Gene Norris has been named a certified genealogist by the Board of Certification for Genealogists. He is the only certified genealogist specializing in Cherokee ancestry.
TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Board of Certification for Genealogists recently announced that Cherokee Heritage Center (CHC) Senior Genealogist Gene Norris has been named a certified genealogist (CG).

Norris, who has been the genealogist at the CHC since June 2003, is one of only two board certified genealogists in Oklahoma and the only certified genealogist specializing in Cherokee ancestry.

“Norris worked hard for over a year’s time to complete the application process, research and document his work, pass the scrutiny of three board judges, and deserves to enjoy his new title and respect from genealogists around the world. He is uniquely qualified as a Cherokee genealogist,” said Lynn C. McMillion, Executive Director of the Board of Certification for Genealogists in Washington, DC. “I am delighted to at last be able to tell Gene he is Certified Genealogist no. 910”, she added.

Norris has over 20 years experience in genealogy and more than 10 of those years specializing in Cherokee genealogy. He has written several articles for genealogical and historical society publications and assisted in research for several books and has also written several family history publications.

As the genealogist for the Cherokee Family Research Center’s genealogy library in the Cherokee Heritage Center, he is available for consultation Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The consultation fee is $20 per hour for non-members of the Cherokee National Historical Society, Inc, and $10 per hour for members of the Society.

The Cherokee Heritage Center is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit agency devoted to the preservation and promotion of Cherokee history and culture through more than 30 annual events, two competitive art shows and several attractions. These activities help the Cherokee Heritage Center to preserve and promote Cherokee history and culture, and to educate Cherokee people and the public about history, culture and traditions.

For more information on the Cherokee National Historical Society or the Cherokee Heritage Center Genealogy Department, call 918-456-6007 and/or visit the CHC web site.
