TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation is currently accepting
applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The
program is designed to provide emergency heating aid to applicants who
meet eligibility requirements. Each year, approximately 1,700 applicants
receive assistance through Cherokee Nation’s LIHEAP Program.
“LIHEAP is available every winter to families throughout the Cherokee
Nation that need help keeping their homes warm,” said Jerry Snell,
director of family assistance for the Cherokee Nation. “It’s good to
know that Cherokee Nation has a direct impact on keeping our elderly and
disabled tribal citizens comfortable, safe and warm at home during the
winter.”
To qualify applicants must live in the jurisdictional boundaries of the
Cherokee Nation, meet income guidelines and the head of household must
be of Native American decent. All applications must include a CDIB card,
proof of residency, such as a utility bill and provide income
verification.
Applications will be accepted until Friday, December 22. For more
