TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation crowned the 2006-2007 Little Miss Cherokee and Little Mister Cherokee Leadership contest winners recently in the Sequoyah High School gym in Tahlequah. This event is held annually in conjunction with the Cherokee National Holiday to promote Cherokee culture and history among young Cherokees.

“The Little Miss and Mister Cherokee Leadership contest has been part of the Cherokee National Holiday for several years. Each year it has grown in popularity and size,” said Joyce Bunch, the event’s coordinator. “This event gives our youngest citizens a chance to share their knowledge about our Cherokee heritage, language and culture. These young participants are our future leaders, and we hope this contest will serve as a stepping-stone for them.”

Four age divisions encompassed both boys and girls: ages three to four, five to seven, eight to ten, and 11 to 13.

Winner of the girls’ division for three- to four-year-olds was Darsi Woolard; first runner-up in this category was Sinihele Ellenwood, and the second runner-up was Chenoa Turtle. The winner of the boys’ division in this age group was Landen Dry, with D’Mahree’ Turner first runner-up and Alek Hogshooter second runner-up.

The boys’ division winner for five- to seven-year-olds was Garrett Tune, with Wazhozha Palmer first runner-up and Dalyn Patterson second runner-up. In the girls’ division, the winner was Chelbie Turtle, and Sarah Henson and Preslee Keener were first and second runners-up, respectively.

Kiah Goff won the eight- to ten-year-old boys’ division, while Katlynn Kent won in the girls’ division. In the girls’ division, Jordan Sunagoowie and Christyann Marshall were first and second runners-up, respectively.

Christian Sizer won the boys’ 11- to 13-year-old division, and Steven Fields was first runner-up. Natalie Mulholland won in the same division for girls, with Ashely Miller named first runner-up and Taylor Goff second runner-up.

Contestants were judged on traditional dress, Cherokee history and traditions, and poise and personality. A cultural knowledge interview was also conducted with the contestants.
