In August, Team Oklahoma, made up of the top 12 finishers who competed at Catoosa, won the Association Division in the Native American Cup tournament in Acme, Michigan. Team Oklahoma consists of 12 members, eight of whom are citizens of the Cherokee Nation and three of whom work for Cherokee Nation.
“The Native American Cup event is in its early stages and will only continue to grow as more tribes get involved. Next year we should have no problem getting an all-Cherokee team together to compete in the Tribal Division,” said Ben Phillips, Team Oklahoma captain and a multimedia developer in Cherokee Nation’s Information Systems Department. “It was great to have the opportunity to play in this prestigious event with such great weather.”
Other members of Team Oklahoma are Danny Mosier, John Mosier, Steve Goff, Patrick Six, Dennis Carter and Rodney Sapp, Cherokee; Nick Phillips, Chickasaw; Daryk Meigs, United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma; Gary Henson, Cherokee/Cheyenne; Adam WhiteEagle, Choctaw; and Marvin Mulholland, LTBB Odawa.
The Oklahoma Golf Classic was established as a venue for Native American golfers and gives them a chance to compete to represent Oklahoma tribes at the Native American Cup tournament.
The Native American Cup golf tournament is a three-day team event loosely modeled after the Ryder Cup competition. Native Americans representing their tribes or associations compete against each other in various match formats. Teams that compile the most points earn the cup for their respective divisions. During an awards banquet at the end of the tournament, trophies and scholarships are distributed.
The Native American Cup Organization is a Michigan-based, Native-operated, nonprofit organization whose core mission is to raise awareness within Indian County of the importance of education. Scholarships are awarded to college-bound Native Americans, and the organization’s signature fund-raiser is the annual Native American Cup tournament.
