TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council unanimously supported a resolution for separate recognition of the Delaware Tribe.

Chiefs of both tribes proposed a bill last month to the U.S. Congress to confer federal recognition on the Delaware tribe. The Cherokees and the Delaware tribes have committed to the proposed legislation that could end years of legal disputes, and move forward the Delaware’s federal status.

Delaware Chief Jerry Douglas offered a comment Following the vote, Delaware Chief Jerry Douglas said he was “not big on making speeches,” and added he would “just like for us all to get along for awhile.”

The tribal councilors also honored three servicemen for their military service during the August Tribal Council meeting. Thomas Mitchell Pumpkin, John Sunday and Shea Standlee were recognized for their dedication to the United States Military. Each month the Cherokee Nation honors Cherokee citizens who have represented the Native American community in the United States’ effort to maintain freedom for all.

The next regular meeting of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council will be held on Monday, September 11 at 6 p.m., in the Council Chambers located in the Cherokee Nation tribal complex.
