TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The award-winning Cherokee National Youth Choir will be the opening act for the annual Cherokee National Holiday Gospel Singing event, on Friday, September 1, at 6 p.m., under the tent located west of the Cherokee Nation complex on Highway 62, south of Tahlequah.
The Youth Choir group has been nominated as the Native American Music Awards’ Group of the Year, and its latest album, “Cherokee Sunday Morning,” is also nominated for a NAMMY for Best Gospel/Christian/Inspirational Recording.
The choir, which was established six years ago to revitalize the nation's language and culture, is comprised of approximately 40 students within the CN. The group has gained popularity in recent years and has toured throughout Oklahoma and the United States including special performances at Mount Rushmore and the National Congress of the American Indian Convention. The choir has also performed throughout the Washington, D.C., area including the White House and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in honor of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. This year’s theme is in commemoration of the Act of 1906, which provided that the tribal constitutional governments of the Five Tribes should continue in “full force and effect,” thus ensuring continuous tribal sovereignty.
