Four young women will compete for the title. This year’s contestants are: Christina Bunch, of Stilwell, Vanessa John, of Tahlequah, Michelle Locust, of Gore, and Lora Miller, of Stilwell.
The pageant provides a $3,000 grand prize scholarship to the winner. The first runner-up will receive a $2,000 scholarship and the second runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The competition identifies youth leadership to represent the Cherokee Nation. Miss Cherokee will serve as a goodwill ambassador and messenger to promote the government, history, language and culture of the Cherokee people.
The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in honor of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. This year’s theme is “The Cherokee Nation Continues in Full Force and Effect” in commemoration of the Act of 1906, which provided that the tribal constitutional governments of the Five Tribes should continue in “full force and effect,” thus ensuring continuous tribal sovereignty.
