TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The 54th Annual Cherokee National Holiday will host a 5K Run on Saturday, September 2nd at 7:30 a.m., on the east side of the side of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex.
Pre-registration is going on now through Monday, August 28th. Participates registering early will be charged an entry fee of $15. Runners can register the day of the race at 6:30 a.m. Race day entry is $18.
The first 350 entrants will receive a free t-shirt. Awards will be presented to the overall male and female finishers of the race. Medals will be awarded to the winner in each age group.
According to event coordinator Sherry Parks the event is a healthy way to get involved in the holiday festivities.
“Our volunteer staff would like to encourage everyone to get involved in the run,” said Parks. “We are ready to handle the registration process for a large number of participants. If you’re not comfortable taking part in the 5K run, we are hosting a one mile Fun Run!”
The Cherokee National Holiday has been held since 1953 in honor of the signing of the 1839 Cherokee Constitution. This year’s theme is in commemoration of the Act of 1906, which provided that the tribal constitutional governments of the Five Tribes should continue in “full force and effect,” thus ensuring continuous tribal sovereignty.
