Tahlequah, OK - The Cherokee Heritage Center is currently seeking applicants interested in enrolling in the Cherokee Humanities Course offered by University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. As part of the Meredith Indigenous Humanities Center, students can earn up to six hours of college credit in either Indian Studies or history. The course is designed to strengthen the fundamental grasp of Cherokee culture. This is done by involving Cherokee and non-Cherokee people in college level courses in the humanities to strengthen their critical skills using the Cherokee language and philosophy.
In addition, the course is intended to offer college level academics at no cost to students who normally would not attend an institution of higher learning due to income, race or other hindrance. Along with free tuition, mileage and childcare reimbursements are provided to qualified students.
Classes are scheduled on Monday evenings, starting at 6 p.m. A maximum of 20 students will be accepted. Students are asked to attend both 15 week sessions in the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters. Applications are due no later than August 18. For more information or to receive an application, contact the Cherokee Heritage Center Education Department, phone: 918-456-6007, or by e-mail.
