Participants at a recent Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation fitness day camp learn teambuilding skills. The group will be hosting two camps in May at Camp Heart of the Hills in Welling.
TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation Program will be hosting two residential camps for youth in the tribe’s 14-county jurisdiction May 22–26 and again May 29–June 1 at Camp Heart of the Hills in Welling. The camp will provide campers with an opportunity to learn and practice behaviors that promote a healthy lifestyle.

“This will be our 16th year sponsoring summer camps, and we are looking forward to another season,” said Margie Burkhart, program coordinator for the Healthy Nation Program.

The camp is free and open to both boys and girls ages 9-12 who reside in the 14-county jurisdictional boundary of the Cherokee Nation and have a CDIB card.

“Activities will include daily swimming, soccer, traditional games such as marbles and stickball, ropes course, and climbing wall. Burkhart said, “They will also learn about diabetes, nutrition, the importance of physical activity, and experience a variety teambuilding games”.

Last year, as the result of an agreement with Florida Atlantic University (FAU), thirty two Registered Nurses who were studying to obtain a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing participated as counselors for the Healthy Nation camp.

“The Registered Nurses who participated were from various countries, including Africa, Russia, Sweden, Holland, El Salvador, and Brazil,” Burkhart said. “The nurses taught educational courses for campers and shared information concerning music, dance, dress and other customs with the campers.”

A new group of Nurses will be returning this year. The agreement between FAU and Cherokee Nation provides the Nurses with an optional experience to complete the requirements for a Community Practicum course.
