“We are so proud of both of our girls and boys basketball teams,” said Gina Stanley, SHS superintendent. “We were very lucky to have both teams qualify for the state tournament and even luckier to have one team bring home a gold ball. We couldn’t be more pleased with their performances this year. We have a lot to celebrate.”
The celebration will be held May 2 and will begin at 1:30 p.m. with a pep assembly in the Sequoyah High School gymnasium. The pep assembly will be followed by an autograph session with the players and a victory parade through downtown Tahlequah to the Cherokee Nation Court House where the basketball team will unveil the state championship trophy and address the crowd. Festivities will continue at 5:00 with a hog fry at the SHS cafeteria followed by a victory pow wow in the gymnasium.
“Our team really came together with our returning players and new comers complimenting each other,” said Bill Nobles, SHS girls’ basketball coach. “Both our defense and offense improved from the previous season. Our girls worked hard from late May ’05 to championship Saturday and truly earned the right to call themselves, ‘state champions’.”
The public is invited to attend the festivities and show their support for the Sequoyah High School basketball teams. For more information call, phone: 918-453-5400.
