Director of the Cherokee Nation Cancer Programs Kym Cravatt stated that the program helps provide valuable funding for annual mammography screenings, the best chance for early detection of breast cancer.
"Our program helps to provide funding to eligible women for yearly breast and cervical cancer screenings," Cravatt said.
The 6th Annual Breast Cancer Survivors Camp, "Strong Mind, Strong Heart; Together We Can Make a Difference," drew in close to 100 breast cancer survivors, guests and other participants from across the Cherokee Nation's 14-county area.
"This year's camp allowed for participants to take part in basket weaving, dream catcher making and a talking circle," Cravatt said.
Tulsa's KJRH Channel 2 Anchor Karen Larson served as guest speaker for the one-day camp. Larson spoke on the struggles she has dealt with during her mother's battle with breast cancer.
"As a survivor or someone who knows another with cancer you have to make your moments count," Larson said.
Events are planned throughout the Cherokee Nation to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, including a health fair on Oct. 25 in the community room, behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees, at the tribal complex on Highway 62.
