TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Marble City’s hometown girl, LaShawna Fields, is fully immersed in her duties as Miss Cherokee of the Cherokee Nation. Since her September crowning ceremony at Cherokee National Holiday, Fields has made numerous appearances, including Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meetings and the dedication ceremony of the Cherokee Warriors Memorial.

Fields will be working hard during the month of December, attending holiday functions representing the tribe. Miss Cherokee can be seen at the Tahlequah Christmas Parade on December 2, the Cherokee National Youth Choir Concert in Tahlequah on December 3, the Vian Christmas Parade, the Marble City Christmas Parade on December 10 and the Gourd Society Powwow on the same day.

In addition to public appearances, Fields goes to area schools and visits with children to educate them about Cherokee history, culture, and traditions. Sometimes she reads to them or encourages them to be the best they can be and to achieve their dreams. She has been able to achieve many of her dreams already.

“I enjoy working with small kids,” Fields said. “Reading to them or just talking with them.”

Fields is studying optometry at Northeastern State University. Fields comes to the office of Miss Cherokee with a great deal of experience, she held the titles of Little Miss Cherokee, Junior Miss Cherokee, as well as first runner-up Junior Miss Indian Oklahoma.

“I always wanted to be Miss Cherokee,” said Fields. “I am very happy to be representing the Cherokee Nation.”

“I was extremely impressed with the quality of the presentations made by all the candidates for Miss Cherokee and Junior Miss Cherokee,” said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith. “The candidates just keep getting better. I am very proud of LeShawna and have every confidence that wherever she goes people will be impressed by her intelligence and graciousness.”

Fields, 18, is the daughter of L.S. and Treva Fields.
