TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - Cherokee Nation is hosting several events to help educate the public on Cherokee Nation Emergency Medical Service (EMS) during National EMS week the week of May 16-20.

National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week will begin with the recognition of the EMS staff during the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council meeting on Monday, May 16.

“We have a lot planned for this week,” said Patricia Hawk, interim director for Cherokee Nation EMS. “Our main goal will be to bring awareness to the community on the services that Cherokee Nation EMS can provide.”

On Tuesday, May 17, EMS will be recognized during the National EMS Day at the State Capital in Oklahoma City. They will also be providing story time for kids of all ages at the Tahlequah Public Library at 3:30 p.m.

“We will be handing out coloring books and kids will also have the opportunity to meet Vince and Larry, the crash test dummies and tour one of our ambulances,” said Hawk.

On Wednesday, May 18, EMS will head to Cherokee Nation Head Start and Child Development Center to again hand out coloring books, allow the children to tour the ambulance and see the EagleMed helicopter.

Thursday, May 19, will consist of a First Responder Appreciation Open House from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Cherokee Nation EMS headquarters.

“We hope that by getting out into the community during this week we can show people what Emergency Medical Services are comprised of,” said Martin Webb, ambulance supervisor.

The week of events will wrap up on Friday, May 20 with blood pressure checks at Wal-Mart in Tahlequah. Children and the public will also be allowed to view the ambulances and an appearance will be made by the EagleMed helicopter, weather permitting.
