"This is a great opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and get some physical activity at the same time," said Lu McCraw, public health educator for the Cherokee Nation.
McCraw organized the Cherokee Nation’s first fitness hike last month which drew community members of all ages and was surprised by its’ success.
"The hike last month was such a success, with 115 participants, that another hike has been scheduled for May 14," McCraw said.
The hike will begin at the "Overlook" near Tenkiller State Park, just off of Highway 10 near the spillway. Participants can choose from two separate hiking trails. The first trail is a two-mile hike up to the Methodist Boy’s Home and back to the park. The second trail is a four-mile hike down to Stayhorn Landing and back to the park. Vans will be available for hikers who cannot make it back.
"I was so proud of the hikers during our last hike," McCraw said. "They did very well."
The fitness hike will be held on Saturday, May 14. Registration and sign up begins at 10 a.m. This hike is free and open to the public. Hikers that are 12 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The Cherokee Nation will provide snacks and water to registered hikers.
