TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – Young Cherokees will have an opportunity to learn to play golf for free this summer, thanks to a program developed by Cherokee Nation Enterprises.

The Native Tee Golf Program will begin June 6 for junior golfers between 6 and 17 years old. The young golfers will play on the Cherokee Trails Golf Course three miles west of Tahlequah near Sequoyah High School and will receive professional instruction.

"From playing time to professional instruction, we want to introduce young people to the wonderful game of golf, at a wonderful price–free of charge," said CNE Golf Pro Matt Harris. "This summer, join us in forging the future of golf at the Cherokee Trails Golf Course in beautiful Tahlequah."

Each Monday, from June 6 through Aug. 1, with the exception of July 4, CNE will sponsor free junior golf play at Cherokee Trails beginning at noon. Participants will need to have proof of Cherokee Nation citizenship (blue card) before taking part in the program. Parents of interested juniors are encouraged to call for tee times (required) up to 7 days in advance. Golfers between the ages of 6 and 12 must be accompanied by an adult during their round.

Each Tuesday in June and July, with the exception of July 5, CNE will sponsor "Intro to Golf" professional instruction sessions for junior golfers ages 6 to 17. A maximum of 30 junior golfers will be allowed in each fun, informative session with instruction provided by members of the CNE golf professional staff, Harris said.

Available instruction dates are June 7, 14, 21, 28 and July 12, 19 and 26. Sessions for students 6 to 11 years old are 8-9 a.m., and 9:30-10:30 a.m. for 12 to 17 year olds.

For more information about these introductory instructional golf sessions or to sign up their children, parents are encouraged to call the Cherokee Trails Golf shop staff, phone: 918-458-4294.

Cherokee Nation Enterprises is the retail, gaming, entertainment and hospitality segment of the Cherokee Nation. The federally chartered tribal corporation is entirely owned by the Cherokee Nation. CNE provides revenue to the Cherokee Nation in the form of a dividend, and the money is used to help fund tribal health, education, community services and housing programs.

CNE operates casinos in Catoosa, West Siloam Springs, Roland, Fort Gibson and Tahlequah as well as two Cherokee Outpost convenience stores, a gift shop, seven Cherokee retail tobacco shops, the Cherokee Hills Golf Course in Catoosa and the Cherokee Trails Golf Course in Tahlequah. The company also owns and operates Will Rogers Downs, a 236-acre horse racetrack just east of Claremore. CNE employs nearly 2,800 people throughout northeastern Oklahoma.
