TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is hosting a St. Patrick's Day Dance on Saturday, March 19, from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. The dance is open to the public and families are welcome to attend.

"The St. Patrick's Day dance is no ordinary dance," said Lu McCraw, Cherokee Nation public health educator. "All participants will be issued a dance card and prizes will be awarded to those dancers who have the most dance time in either the male or female category."

Prizes will be awarded in seven age group categories: 10 and under, 11-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and over 60.

"I thought a dance might be a fun way to get people moving," McCraw said.

This dance is a WINGS community event. It is free and there will be no alcohol, drugs or smoking permitted. Cherokee Nation will provide refreshments, door prizes and incentives for dancing.

"WINGS is a self-paced incentive based program developed to promote the importance and awareness of regular physical activity, health education, and nutrition for a healthier lifestyle," McCraw said. "Physical activity includes more than just walking, running, or lifting weights."

The dance will be held in the Cherokee Nation Community Room, located directly behind the Restaurant of the Cherokees on Highway 62, 3.5 miles south of Tahlequah. For more information or to register for the dance, call the Cherokee Nation Healthy Nation office at (800) 256-0671, ext. 2260 or (918) 456-0671, ext. 2260 for Lu McCraw or ext. 2711 for Shannon Fields.
