TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Heritage Center is hosting its fourth annual genealogy seminar, "Genealogy of Hope: How the Cherokee Survived" will be held, April 9, at the Tsi-la-gi Community Room behind the Cherokee Nation Gift Shop in Tahlequah.This year’s guest speakers include: Genealogists, David Keith Hampton, who will speak on the families descendents of those Cherokee recorded in Emmett Starr‘s "History of the Cherokee Indians . " Tom Mooney , archivists at the Cherokee Heritage Center , will discuss Cherokee research on the web. Wyman Kirk, anthropologists and coordinator of strategic intelligence for the Cherokee Nation and a member of the State of Sequoyah Convention Commission, will be speaking about the commission centennial anniversary. Marybelle Chase , genealogist who has also been an author, editor, researcher, writer and publisher known for work in, "The Cherokee Tracer" a quarterly publication specializing in Cherokee records . Chase will be speaking about her time with the quarterly and the publications that she has researched.
This year’s key speaker is genealogist and author, Jack Baker who is president of the National Trail of Tears Association, president of the Goingsnake Historical District Association, board member and treasurer of the Cherokee National Historical Society, Inc. Baker will be speaking on the newly translated Cherokee Moravian Missionary records which have revealed many interesting things about several Cherokee families.
All interested participants are urged to pre-register because class size will be limited to the first 70. For a limited time pre-registration fees are $30 dollars for the members of Cherokee National Historical Society, Inc., $35 for non-members. The pre-registration is due by March 20. Prices after March 20 and the day of the seminar are $45 for members and $50 for nonmembers.
