NOWATA, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation recently broke ground on a new 25,000 square foot health center in Nowata, Okla.

“This, along with our expansion project in Sallisaw, will offer quality care with easy accessibility in the northern and southern areas of our Nation,”said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith. “It's something we have been planning since the completion of our long range plan health plan in 2001.”

The new health center will be located next to the existing Cherokee Nation health facility at 202 East Galer Road. The center is projected to be complete by the end of 2006.

“This new health center will include a new radiology department, the Cherokee Nation’s first drive-up pharmacy, behavioral health services and it will be the first clinic with a room large enough to hold community events,” said Melissa Gower, group leader of Cherokee Nation Health Services. “These health care services will provide our citizens with a large offering of health care assistance in one location.”

“The proposed cost for this new facility is approximately $6 million,” Gower said. “Consideration to both the Cherokee culture and the history of Nowata is included in the clinic’s overall design. The finished interior of the clinic will feature Terrazzo flooring and we will be providing ergonomic furniture to enhance safety and efficiency.”

Cherokee Nation operates six primary care health facilities and two satellite clinics within its 14-county jurisdictional area. Construction is planned to begin in approximately 90 days, pending the final construction bidding process and approval of financing.
