TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation recently expanded their radio show from a thirty-minute show in the Cherokee language to an hour-long show in both English and Cherokee. The show also has a new host, Dennis Sixkiller, of Tahlequah, began producing the show in August and spear-headed the expansion project.

"I really enjoy it," Sixkiller said. "I enjoy getting out and meeting the elders in the community. I think it’s very important that Cherokee citizens have a way to get the (Cherokee Nation) news. A lot of our people out there want to know what’s going on. I want to encourage listeners to give me feedback on the show; I want them to tell me what they’d like to hear."

The new, improved, longer edition of the Cherokee Nation radio show includes music in the Cherokee language, interviews with Cherokee elders and information on programs that the Cherokee Nation has to offer, as well as the latest Cherokee Nation community news.

"I try to encourage families to sing songs in Cherokee for the show," Sixkiller said. "Even if it’s a song that I’ve used before, I like to have new voices."

Sixkiller is a Cherokee language instructor and speaks Cherokee as his first language. He plans to expand the radio show’s coverage area to reach all of the Cherokee Nation’s 14-county jurisdictional area.

"The Cherokee Nation radio show was great at half an hour and it’s even better now that it’s an hour," said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. "Having portions of the show in English will only expand the audience, while still providing our citizens an opportunity to hear their language broadcast into their homes and cars, keeping us in touch with our nation and our language."

The Cherokee Nation radio show currently airs on KEOK 101.7 FM on Sundays from 8 a.m. until 9 a.m. and on KTLQ 1350 AM from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. For more information about the Cherokee Nation radio show, contact Dennis Sixkiller, phone: 918-456-0671 (ext.2489).
