TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation will host a public hearing to discuss revising the current tribal law that deals with the definition of Indian owned business, Indian preference and other aspects of the Cherokee Nation Tribal Employment Rights Office (TERO). The hearing will be held on Saturday, January 29 from 9 a.m. until noon in the Tribal Council Chambers of the W.W. Keeler Tribal Complex, south of Tahlequah on Highway 62. All interested businesses, contractors and vendors who currently supply services to the Cherokee Nation, Cherokee Nation Industries, Cherokee Nation Enterprises or the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation and those who are interested in doing so in the future are invited to attend and give input on the law.

"This hearing is designed to be a productive meeting focused on solutions rather than complaints," said Audra Smoke-Conner, who represents Cherokee County on the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council and will chair the hearing. "This is your opportunity to express concerns offer suggestions on how to improve (Tribal Employment Rights Office) TERO at Cherokee Nation."

Presenters will discuss current TERO law and invite feedback from participants. Six specific areas have been identified as discussion topics for the meeting. They are: 1) Definition of Indian owned, 2) what type of preference should be given, 3) grievance and appeals process, 4) process improvements requirements, 5) bonding and insurance requirements, and 6) sole sourcing requirements.

Vendors may also submit written comments for consideration. Written comments should be sent to: Cherokee Nation Tribal Council, P.O. Box 948, Tahlequah, Oklahoma 74465. Vendor’s written comments may be read into public record at the hearing, if requested. Vendors requiring a response must include their name and contact information.

"The Cherokee Nation citizens deserve to be heard," Smoke-Conner said. "This public hearing is your opportunity to be involved in the process."
