"The sheriff in Rogers County works well with us," said Sharon Wright, director of the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service. "We’ve needed it for a long time. It will make policing our casino and Will Rogers Downs much easier."
"Cross-deputization enables us to work together in making sure Rogers County residents are safe as we grow our businesses in the area and create jobs," said Cara Cowan, Cherokee Nation Tribal Council member who represents Rogers County.
The Cherokee Nation currently operates the Cherokee Casino and Resort and Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, both in Rogers County.
The Cherokee Nation Marshals have sole jurisdiction over Cherokee restricted land. No state or local agency can enforce the law on Indian land without a cross-deputization agreement with the Marshal Service. The Marshals will also be able to assist Rogers County officers at the sheriff’s request.
"Without the heritage of the Cherokee people, Rogers County would not be what it is today," said Jerry Prather, Rogers County Sheriff. "The opening of the Cherokee Casino in Catoosa and the purchase of Will Rogers Downs are indicative of the strong leadership role of the Cherokee Nation in the local area. I am pleased with the caliber of personnel that I met in the Marshal Service while working on the details of this agreement and look forward to working together with Chief Chad Smith and the Cherokee Nation."
The Cherokee Nation Marshal Service has 30 sworn officers and 17 reserve officers.
