CATOOSA, OKLAHOMA – Cherokee Casino is joining relief efforts for people devastated by the tsunamis in southeastern Asia last weekend.

The casino is donating $20,000 to the American Red Cross International Relief Fund to help "fellow world citizens" in their time of need and donated another $5,000 to the local Red Cross chapter for relief efforts in Oklahoma.

"The Cherokee Nation is proud to work with the Red Cross in assisting the people of southeastern Asia who were impacted by the recent natural disasters in that area," said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. "Our businesses are always good community partners, and this is a way that we can help people in a time of crisis."

"The American Red Cross is grateful to Cherokee Nation and Cherokee Casinos for its leadership gift to help with this unprecedented international relief operation in southern Asia," said Mary C. Ogle, Chief Executive Officer at the Tulsa Area Chapter. "This gift will save thousands of lives. We are equally thankful for the additional generosity to ensure that the American Red Cross can continue to provide services to families in need right here in northeastern Oklahoma including food, clothing and shelter after home fires and other disasters. Trained and caring Tulsa Red Cross volunteers respond to an average of 50 disaster incidents every month."

"Cherokee Nation and Cherokee Casinos are helping to ensure the American Red Cross is able to help, right here in Green Country and half way around the world, thank you," Ogle added.

Cherokee Nation Enterprises, which operates Cherokee Casino, provides revenue to the Cherokee Nation in the form of a dividend. That money is used to help fund health care, education, community services and housing programs.

CNE operates casinos in Catoosa, West Siloam Springs, Roland, Fort Gibson, and Tahlequah as well as Cherokee Outpost convenience stores, Cherokee retail tobacco shops, two gift shops and two golf courses. CNE employs more than 1,950 people throughout northeastern Oklahoma.
