TAHLEQUAH, OK - The Cherokee Nation is forming a new choir to help young children to learn to sing in Cherokee.

"The students will learn Cherokee hymns and be a part of a learning choir that will prepare them for spots in our Cherokee National Youth Choir as they get older," said Mary Kay Henderson, choir director.

Children who are interested in joining the learning choir should attend either of two community meetings. The first meeting is at the Bell Community Center on February 17 from 3:30 until 5 p.m. and the second is at Jay Community Center on February 24 from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m.

"These choirs will meet once a month and will be available to sing on a limited basis in and around their communities," Henderson said.

All monthly meetings will be held after school from 3:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Learning choir enrollment is open to Cherokee students in the 3rd through 6th grades. Students should bring a photocopy (no originals please) of their Cherokee Nation tribal enrollment card (blue card) and their parent or guardian to the first meeting.

"There is no audition, come ready to have fun and learn," Henderson said.
