TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Tribal Council approved a resolution that will allow the Nation to designate a Sequoyah High School (SHS) building as historic property during its February meeting."It is important to the perpetuation of our Cherokee culture and history to preserve historic Cherokee sites," said Principal Chief Chad Smith. "Naming it the Jack Brown House is an appropriate salute to one of our distinguished Cherokee families."
The historic building located on the SHS grounds will be dedicated the Jack Brown House and will be renovated and used as guest quarters for dignitaries visiting the Cherokee Nation.
The resolution was introduced by Chuck Hoskin, who represents Craig County on the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council. He introduced Marion Hagerstrand, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Brown, from the audience. Hoskin read from the resolution that Jack Brown, from Marble City, was a long-time educator and Cherokee citizen, who became Superintendent of the Sequoyah Orphan Training School, now Sequoyah High School, and remained the driving force of the school for 32 years. He also spoke of Jack Brown’s legacy, his son Jack Leflore and daughter, Marion, who were both in the service during World War II and continued their service to the Cherokee Nation as citizens.
"The historic residence located on the Sequoyah campus is a constant reminder of these prominent Cherokee citizens and public servants who once lived within its walls," Hoskin read. "The Nation desires to recognize the importance of public service by utilizing the building to accommodate distinguished visitors or dignitaries when they travel to the Cherokee Nation."
The Council also passed resolutions adding Joe Crittenden and Linda O’Leary to the Cherokee Nation Industries advisory board and Buel Anglen, Meredith Frailey and Bill Johnson to the Cherokee Nation Enterprises advisory board. Additionally, they passed a resolution confirming the nomination of Steven Crittenden as a member of the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation Board of Commissioners. They also nominated and confirmed Audra Smoke-Conner, who represents Cherokee County on the Tribal Council, to serve as Tribal Council Secretary.
In other action, the Council passed resolutions authorizing the payment of attorney fees from the Arkansas Riverbed settlement fund the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
During Principal Chief Chad Smith’s monthly report he presented the certificates of recognition for military service to World War II and Korean War veteran J. W. Turnbull, World War II Alamo Scout Zeke McConnell and active service Marines Corporal Daniel Mead and Lance Corporal David Mead.
