TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation is offering funding opportunities for Cherokee community- and faith-based organizations who are interested in expanding or improving services to their members or area residents.

The project, known as the Cherokee Nation Compassion Capital Demonstration Fund Project, will issue up to 40 sub-awards, ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. A total of more than $354,000 has been budgeted for the project.

The sub-awards will be given to organizations with strong service history, particularly in, but not limited to, alcohol and drug abuse, diabetes prevention, prisoner re-entry, marriage and family counseling and elderly services. Organizations selected must have basic management and bookkeeping skills or be engaged in training to develop and practice sound financial management.

“The sub-awards are one part of the overall Cherokee Nation Compassion Capital Project,” said Rick Gassaway, Cherokee Nation Manager of Community and Volunteer Organizing.

Gassaway added that the project will provide a three-year program of training and technical assistance to organizations to expand services, adopt model projects and apply for funding opportunities.

Qualifying organizations include community- and faith-based groups that are owned, operated or managed by a majority of Cherokee Nation citizens. Groups must have an operating budget of less than $100,000 per year and have a minimum two-year history of providing social services to their community.

Informational meetings are scheduled to provide an overview of the award and application assistance. Application will only be available to those organizations that attend one of the scheduled meetings, and attendance at one of the meetings is part of the eligibility requirements.

Interested organizations are invited to attend one of the meetings and to apply for a sub-award. Meetings will be held December 12 at the Jay Community Building at 7 p.m.; December 15 at the Sallisaw Housing Authority at 7 p.m.; December 16 at the Tulsa Maxwell Park Library at 7 p.m.; and December 17 at the Cherokee Nation Tribal Services conference room in Tahlequah at 10 a.m. Additional meetings will be held January 5 at the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation in Stilwell at 7 p.m.; January 7 at the Cherokee Nation Tribal Services conference room in Tahlequah at 10 a.m.; January 10 at Tom Buffington Heights in Vinita at 7 p.m.; and January 12 at the Muskogee Public Library at 7 p.m.
