SALLISAW, OKLAHOMA - The first steel beams are now up and construction is well under way on the new Cherokee Casino in Sallisaw. The 22,000 square-foot building, located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 59 and Interstate 40, will boast 220 electronic gaming machines, six blackjack tables, a bar and grill and a stage for live entertainment. In addition, the facility will create jobs for more than 100 people upon completion, and should prove to be a needed boost for the local economy.
"We feel that creating jobs for Cherokees is one of the best services we can provide our people," said Chad Smith, Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation. "When we create career path jobs in communities like Sallisaw, it helps us keep our culture strong and keep our families close to home."
David Stewart, CEO of Cherokee Nation Enterprises, the tribally-owned corporation that operates Cherokee Casinos, said that this is another example of how the Cherokee Nation has become a proven leader in economic development for Sequoyah County.
"We are committed to creating jobs and stimulating the economy as a way to assist with the overall vitality of the Sallisaw area," said Stewart.
The casino is expected to open in May 2006. Another 5,200 square foot building on the site will be used for office space.
