TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – Cherokee Nation officials recently donated $120,000 to the Boys and Girls Clubs within the jurisdiction of the Cherokee Nation. The education of children in the Cherokee Nation got a much needed boost thanks to the efforts of Cherokee Nation Career Services and the Tribal Council thanks to the recent donation.

“The Cherokee Nation is very supportive of the Boys and Girls Clubs’ mission and the accomplishments that are demonstrated by the youth who are members of the clubs,” said Diane Kelley, Cherokee Nation Career Services Group Leader.

Kelly and other Cherokee Nation officials met with the Boys and Girls Clubs within the jurisdiction of the Cherokee Nation last year to form a Cherokee Alliance of the clubs. Each of the clubs in the alliance have a high population of Cherokee and Native American members and are recognized nationally as Native American Boys and Girls clubs.

A total of $120,000 was donated to the six clubs in the Cherokee Nation, including Tahlequah, Jay, Pryor, Sallisaw, Nowata and Chelsea. Funds from business revenue and community block grants were used this year to assist the clubs. The funds will be used to develop after-school programs related to tribal and culture activities as well as drug prevention programs. More than 10,000 students participate in the clubs throughout the Cherokee Nation.

Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith and Deputy Principal Chief Joe Grayson were on hand with tribal council members to present the checks to club directors.
