TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation will be conducting an academic study for visual art themes and styles of Cherokee art, and invites artists to submit photographs of their work. Categories for the study include paintings, sculpture, pottery, ceramics, basketry, installation art, tools, weapons, carvings, architecture, clothing, adornment, beadwork, textiles and other traditional arts and crafts.

The project will be for the purpose of creating a book illustrating the history of art on the Cherokee people. Plans include for the book to feature the most illustrative examples of Cherokee art, principally focused on the 20th century and well known art of our ancestors. The books will be comprised of living artists, and will serve as a guide of the evolution of Cherokee art and the techniques that are specifically Cherokee.

The book will include illustrations, photographs and images supplemented by brief descriptive narratives about each featured piece, the artist, and discussion about what makes the art distinctively Cherokee. Besides being enjoyed by art collectors, the book will also serve as a resource tool for teaching art to students interested in the study of Cherokee art.

“A project of this scope requires the expertise of Cherokee people who enjoy and respect their tribal art, past and present,” said Margaret Raymond, Cherokee Nation Development Director. “Since little has been published about Cherokee art, this work might become the leading authority on how our early indigenous art is represented.”

Raymond added that the project will be important from the historical, artistic and governmental perspective and that it will put historic and contemporary culture together.

Citizens of the Cherokee Nation and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and members of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma are invited to participate in the project. Artists may submit up to four pieces of their art work. Digital images or 8x10 color photographs of the work with a copy of the artist’s CDIB card must be submitted for review. Submittals will not be returned. To submit images of the work or for more information, contact Lisa Rutherford, phone: 918-453-5633 or send email to: lrutherford@cherokee.org
