TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation Talking Leaves Job Corps (TLJC) recently earned one of the most prestigious awards among Job Corps centers, 12 stars. The National Job Corps Association rates Job Corps centers quarterly, using a star system to rate their accomplishments, with 12 being the maximum number of stars that a center can achieve. TLJC has earned all 12 stars for both the first and second quarter of 2005.A big component of the National Job Corps Association star program is community involvement. Joyce Rose, community relations liaison at TLJC, is passionate about her community and shares her enthusiasm for volunteering with her students.
“We (TLJC) do a great many activities in the community,” Rose said. “We have kids helping at Help-In-Crisis and at Cherokee Nation every day. Our students also go out and read poetry at area nursing homes.”
The student’s volunteer work helped the center to earn stars. TLJC also earned starts for bringing Congressman Dan Boren to campus to speak to students, and coordinating events with and for area military personnel.
Cherokee Nation TLJC offers certification programs in business and technology, culinary arts, electrical wiring, facilities maintenance, health occupations, and material handling. Students may also earn their GED while attending. New classes begin every Tuesday.
