TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation is seeking arts and crafts and concession vendors for the 53rd annual Cherokee National Holiday to be held in Tahlequah, Okla., over Labor Day weekend, September 2-4.
The Holiday, which features more than 40 events, begins Friday, September 2. In addition to arts and crafts, opening day events include a pow-wow and a softball tournament. On Saturday, September 3, there is a morning parade, followed by Principal Chief Chad Smith’s State of the Nation Address. Other highlighted events on Saturday include a traditional Indian food cook-off, gospel singing, fiddler’s contest, fishing tournament, and cultural games like marbles, cornstalk shoot and blow gun competitions. On Sunday, the Holiday continues with a softball tournament, children’s events, arts and crafts and other events.
"There’s a real push to find enough concession vendors to cover several locations," said Louie Slagle, director of the Cherokee National Holiday. "We have activities at the Cherokee Nation Tribal Complex, the Cherokee Nation Capitol Square, the powwow grounds and the softball fields."
The cost of the arts and crafts vendor spaces for all locations is only $60 for Cherokee Nation citizens, $85 for other tribes, $125 for non-tribal citizens and $350 for commercial.
If you are interested in being an arts and crafts or concession vendor, please contact Jolinda LaRue Case, phone: 918-456-0671 (ext.2870) or Gloria Case 918-456-0671 (ext.2539).
The Cherokee Nation celebrates its National Holiday every year over Labor Day weekend, in observance of the signing of the Cherokee Nation constitution. This year’s Holiday theme, "Celebrating the Great State of Sequoyah," commemorates Indian Territory and the state that almost was.
