TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA – The Cherokee Nation passed an act at the April council meeting designed to help the tribe promote future business development.

The act was presented by Meredith Frailey, a Council member representing Mayes County. She explained the details of the legislative act which effectively protects the Cherokee Nation from liability in the financial dealings of its business entities.

"We are not giving up our sovereignty (with this legislation), but exercising our sovereignty to promote business development," Frailey said.

Deputy Chief Joe Grayson presented a commendation on behalf of Principal Chief Chad Smith to Ronald Froman, of Miami, Okla., for his many contributions to Cherokee Nation housing programs. Froman played significant roles in advancing the Cherokee Nation's low income and Title VI housing.

The Sequoyah High School boys' basketball team was recognized during the April Tribal Council meeting for winning the runner-up trophy in the state basketball finals.
The Deputy Chief and Tribal Council honored the Sequoyah High School (SHS) boys' basketball team, which won runner-up in the state tournament in March. The team and coaches were present and received a standing ovation from the audience for their determination, hard work and sportsmanship over the last year.

In other business, the council confirmed retired Major General Jay Edward to the board of Cherokee Nation Industry (CNI) and Ed Hendrix to the board of Cherokee Nation Enterprises. A graduate of West Point Military School, Edward has 28 years of service with the U.S. Air Force. Hendrix comes from Tulsa and holds a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma.

"He (Edward) will help win those military contracts that CNI is so good at implementing," Frailey said. "We are lucky to attract these men to serve on our boards. Both will be assets to our organizations."

The Council also passed several resource management resolutions, including three oil and gas resolutions and a logging initiative.
