Tahlequah, Oklahoma – Students will soon have the opportunity to become part of Cherokee history during Ancient Cherokee Days, Oct. 7 and 8 at the Cherokee Heritage Center. Designed for kindergarten through 12th grade students, Ancient Cherokee Days provides an excellent venue for a school field trip that is both educational and entertaining. This children’s festival will be filled with blowgun shooting, stickball games, basket and pottery demonstrations, storytelling, puppet shows and face painting. In addition to these events, students can take advantage of the many permanent features at the Cherokee Heritage Center, including the Ancient Village, Adam’s Corner Rural Village, Heritage Farm, the Cherokee National Museum and the Museum Store.
The Ancient Village is a replica of a Cherokee village as it would have appeared before European contact. Visitors will witness Cherokee people reenacting the daily lives of their ancestors.
Adams Corner Rural Village is a reconstruction of a late 19th Century rural Cherokee community that includes seven buildings indicative of the lifestyles of Cherokee people. Connected to Adams Corner is Heritage Farm, home to many animals common in this period, including Dominique chickens, Guinea hens, Pineywoods cattle and two ponies whose ancestors carried the Cherokee along the Trail of Tears.
The Cherokee National Museum houses historically and culturally significant artifacts and artwork and presents changing educational exhibits and art shows. The museum features a Museum Store where visitors can purchase handcrafted Cherokee clothing, pottery, prints, jewelry, baskets and weavings, and numerous children’s souvenirs.
One of the most popular attractions is the Trail of Tears exhibit where students learn about the journey of the Cherokee and four other tribes on the Trail of Tears. Through special effects lighting, videos, audio recordings, art work, life-cast figures and holograms, this exhibit gives a detailed account of the Trail of Tears, a tragedy that has become a symbol for the suffering of all Indian people.
Admission to Ancient Cherokee Days is $4 per student. One adult will be admitted free with every 10 children.
