TAHLEQUAH, OKLAHOMA - The Cherokee Nation was recently awarded a prestigious accreditation for excellence at their Head Start centers in Shady Grove and Webbers Falls.“It is a great honor to receive this recognition,” said Verna Thompson, Cherokee Nation Early Childhood Unit director. “It means that our Head Start centers are meeting national standards of excellence.”
The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accreditation is a prestigious recognition that is only awarded to seven percent of early childhood programs nation-wide.
NAEYC accreditation is a rigorous, voluntary process in which early childhood programs must demonstrate that they excel at teaching young children.
The Cherokee Nation Head Start centers in Shady Grove and Webbers Falls had to undergo an intensive self-study, collecting information from parents, teachers, administrators and classroom observations. Early childhood professionals, trained by NAEYC, conducted an on-site visit to validate their self-study results, and a team of national experts independently reviewed all of this information.
The Cherokee Nation Head Start centers in Shady Grove and Webbers Falls will now display the NAEYC torch, the sign of NAEYC accreditation.
The Cherokee Nation currently has 8 Head Start centers and 3 Early Head Start centers that have earned the NAEYC accreditation.
“It’s our goal to have all of our sites receive NAEYC accreditation by 2005,” Thompson said.
