PARK HILL, OKLAHOMA – Hastings Shade will teach a Cherokee marble-making workshop Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Cherokee Heritage Center. This fun, informative class examines the history, rules and craft of the ancient Cherokee game of marbles. Students will also be taught how to make their own Cherokee marble. The Cherokee marble game dates back to 800 A.D. The marbles are traditionally made of stone about the size of a billiard ball. The playing field is 100 feet long containing five holes approximately 10 yards apart forming an L shape. Players toss the marbles in the holes, advancing in sequence to the last hole and returning to the start. The object of the game is to knock the opposing teams’ marbles out of the holes while trying to advance and win.
The Cherokee Heritage Center, devoted to the preservation and promotion of Cherokee history and culture, has designed a series of Traditional Art Classes. Each class focuses on a unique aspect of Cherokee culture and is taught by knowledgeable and experienced teachers. Classes in traditional Cherokee art are primarily geared for adult audiences. Each class is $40 per student which includes tuition and materials. All classes are held at the Cherokee Heritage Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch is not provided. Early registration is encouraged as class sizes are limited.
